How Do Smart Locks Work And How They Make Your Home Safer

Home security starts at your door, and with smart technology, it’s never been easier to be safe.

A smart lock doesn’t mean you hide the key under a bust of Einstein on the porch. It’s even easier than that!

How a Smart Lock Works

Smart technology on your door locks has four components:

  • Keyless entry: You won’t have to keep track of keys with a smart lock. Instead, unlock your door with a 4-digit access code. You can even create different codes for different family members, or create a temporary code for contractors or visitors.

  • Remote access: Smart locks can be controlled with a smartphone app that allows you to remotely lock and unlock doors. If someone forgets their code or Uncle Al from Atlanta shows up unexpectedly, you can let them in from wherever you are.

  • User alerts: Smart lock apps have the option of sending an alert when a specific user enters. That means you can monitor when contractors come and go, or watch to make sure the kids got home from school on time.

  • Reminder alerts: In your rush to work in the morning, did you forget to lock up? Smart locks will send a reminder to your smartphone app, and all you have to do is tap it to set the locks.

Smart Phone Details for New Users

Once you get beyond the basics, you’ll love the integration your new smart locks have with other smart home automation.

  • Video doorbells: With a video doorbell powered by Alarm.com, you can visually verify visitors from any remote location. See who’s at the door, have a chat with the visitor, and –if you choose—let them in with a click of a button.

  • Automate other smart devices: When you get home at night and enter your home, your smart lock can trigger your system to turn on the lights, adjust the thermostat, and turn on the evening news. Set the process to reverse when you lock up on your way to work in the morning.

Don’t Forget the Garage

If your garage is your primary entrance, set up smart access for the garage, too. A smart garage door opener connected to your smart home system is the solution. You’ll get a reminder if you forget to close the garage door and alerts whenever it’s opened and closed.
